Glacier National Park Vehicle Reservation System Breakdown

To manage traffic and protect Glacier National Park's natural beauty, a Vehicle Reservation System is in place for certain areas during the peak summer season. Here's what you need to know:

When Do You Need a Reservation?

You need a vehicle reservation if you're visiting the following areas between May 26 and September 10 (2025 dates may vary slightly):

  1. Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR):

    • Between West Glacier Entrance and Rising Sun.

    • Required from 6 AM to 3 PM daily.

  2. North Fork Area:

    • Includes the Polebridge Entrance.

    • Required from 6 AM to 3 PM daily.

  3. Two Medicine Area:

    • Required from 6 AM to 3 PM daily.

  4. Many Glacier Area:

    • Required from 6 AM to 3 PM daily.

How to Get a Reservation

  1. Purchase Online:Reservations are available on Recreation.gov.

    • Release Dates:

      • 120 days in advance (e.g., for May 26, reservations open January 27).

      • A limited number are released the day before your visit at 8 AM MDT.

    • Cost: $2 per vehicle (separate from park entrance fees).

  2. Plan Early:

    • Reservations sell out quickly, especially for GTSR.

    • Have a Recreation.gov account ready for faster booking.

Exceptions: When You Don’t Need a Reservation

  • Before 6 AM or after 3 PM: No reservation required.

  • With a Service Reservation: If you have a confirmed booking inside the park (e.g., campground, lodging, guided tours), your service reservation acts as your vehicle reservation.

  • Hiking or biking in: No vehicle reservation is needed for non-motorized access.

Park Entrance Fees

A vehicle reservation does not include the park entrance fee.

  • Cost: $35 per vehicle (valid for 7 days).

  • Purchase online, at entrance stations, or via the America the Beautiful Pass (annual pass).

Pro Tips for a Smooth Visit

  1. Be Flexible: Aim for early mornings or evenings to avoid needing a reservation.

  2. Check Availability: Recreation.gov updates availability daily, and last-minute spots can open up.

  3. Explore Other Entrances: Areas outside the reservation zones, like the Apgar area or Bowman Lake (via North Fork), may still offer plenty to see.

  4. Plan Transit Options: Park shuttles operate along GTSR, and you don’t need a vehicle reservation to use them.
